Research from Penn State finds the spice turmeric does the heart good by lowering triglyceride and insulin levels.  “Elevated triglycerides are a risk factor for heart disease,” explains researcher Sheila West.

Her study concluded that incorporating turmeric in an otherwise high fat meal actually lowered triglycerides and insulin levels.  Levels dropped by about one third for those using turmeric in the meal.  “It was surprising,” West told us. “I didn’t expect such a large decrease.”

"To me, the biggest advantage [found in the study] is the lowering of triglycerides and the insulin levels [which dropped about 20 percent]," explains cardiologist Ravi Dave of he University of California, Los Angeles.

Researchers from Chiang Mai looked at 121 patients (on average 61 years old) who underwent scheduled cardiac bypass surgery. Three days before surgery until five days post-op, one group took 4 grams per day of encapsulated curcuminoids. The other group took a placebo.

Among the curcuminoid group, only 13.1 percent had heart attacks during recovery after surgery, compared to 30 percent of the placebo group. Researchers concluded that patients in the curcuminoid group had a 65 percent lower chance of heart attack, according to Reuters.

What is it about curcuminoids that helps protect against heart attack? “The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of curcuminoids may account for their cardioprotective effects shown in this study,” the study authors write in their report.

Diabetes Support Supplements, a new product from ProactiveLife contains Magnesium which may provide health benefits for people at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes

New research shows magnesium found in Diabetes Support Supplements may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Magnesium according to several recently published may provide protections against developing type 2 diabetes for people at risk.  Diabetes Support supplements contains magnesium to assist people improve their overall health by combining diet, exercise and natural supplements.

In a meta-analysis of thirteen published studies the journal of Diabetes Care looked at the potential benefits of magnesium. The conclusion was impressive.  “This meta-analysis provides further evidence supporting that magnesium intake is significantly inversely associated with risk of type 2 diabetes in a dose-response manner.”

According to Diabetes.UK, a study conducted by Liebig University in Germany and published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism investigated the use of oral magnesium supplements for increasing insulin resistance . They monitored 52 overweight and insulin resistant patients, and who were not suffering from diabetes, over a period of six months, with half of them receiving active magnesium supplements and the other half a placebo. It was shown that those who had taken the supplement had much healthier blood sugar levels, as well as an improvement in their insulin sensitivity.

The report pointed out that “The results provide significant evidence that oral magnesium supplementation improves insulin sensitivity even in overweight, non-diabetes subjects, emphasizing the need for an early optimization of magnesium status to prevent insulin resistance and subsequently type 2 diabetes.”

In the June 2011 issue of Clinical Nutrition researchers from Brazil studied 51 type 2 diabetics and measured their magnesium levels.  What they found was a clear association between magnesium levels and blood glucose levels.  Of the people studied 77% were deficient in magnesium and the lower their magnesium level the higher their glucose levels measured.

According to the Journal of American College of Cardiology June 3rd addition type 2 diabetics who consumed pure cocoa witnessed a 30% increase in arterial blood flow.

At the American Heart Institute’s conference in 2011 Harvard researchers looked at 21 studies involving 2,575 participants and found that cocoa consumption is associated with decreased blood pressure, improved blood vessel health, and improvement in cholesterol levels, among other benefits. Eric L. Ding, PhD, of Harvard Medical School believes the healths benefits come from polyphonic flavonoids in cocoa.

A meta analysis conducted by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 2011 reported the following.   “Of the seven studies, five trials reported a significant inverse association between chocolate intake and cardiometabolic disorders. For example, individual studies showed reductions in the risk of coronary heart disease, the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, and the risk of incident diabetes in men.”

A presentation at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2011 Congress showed that people who consumed the most chocolate had a 29% lower risk of stroke compared with people who consumed the lease amount of chocolate.

Turmeric Found in Diabetes Support Supplements, a new product by ProactiveLife Provides a Wide Range of Health Benefits

Recent studies add to the mounting evidence turmeric may provide anti-inflammatory as well as heart health benefits

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used for over 4000 years to treat a variety of health conditions. Diabetes Support Supplements contains pure turmeric and new research from Penn State and Chiang Mai University of Thailand finds the spice may do the heart good by lowering triglyceride and insulin levels and by providing cardiovascular protection post by-pass surgery.

The Penn State study looked at certain cardiac markers and how turmeric impacted those markers.

What is it about curcuminoids that helps protect against heart attack? “The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of curcuminoids may account for their cardioprotective effects shown in this study,” the study authors write in their report.

"It’s very, very encouraging," said Bharat Aggarwal, who studies the use of curcumins in cancer therapy at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Aggarwal, who wasn’t involved in the new study, said research has suggested inflammation plays an important role in the development of a range of diseases, including heart disease — and curcumins could have an effect on those pathways,” as quoted from Reuters.

A research team at Columbia University found Turmeric could play a significant role in preventing type 2 diabetes.  A team of endocrinologists treated mice with turmeric and found less insulin sensitivity and a reduction in risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

“Administration of turmeric or curcumin to diabetic rats reduced the blood sugar, Hb and glycosylated hemoglobin levels significantly. Turmeric and curcumin supplementation also reduced the oxidative stress encountered by the diabetic rats.”

Diabetes Support Supplements, a new product from ProactiveLife, contains pure Cinnamon which may assist in healthy blood sugar levels and lower LDL cholesterol

Diabetes Support Supplements contains one gram of pure cinnamon to assist in healthy blood sugar levels and provide cardiovascular support

Diabetes Support contains pure cinnamon and according to previous studies cinnamon has a positive effect on fasting glucose levels for those with Type 2 Diabetes.  In a study published in European Journal of Clinical Investigation, “The cinnamon extract seems to have a moderate effect in reducing fasting plasma glucose concentrations in diabetic patients with poor glycaemic control.”

According to the study. “A total of 79 patients with diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 2 not on insulin therapy but treated with oral antidiabetics or diet were randomly assigned to take either a cinnamon extract or a placebo capsule three times a day for 4 months in a double-blind study. The amount of aqueous cinnamon extract corresponded to 3 g of cinnamon powder per day. The mean absolute and percentage differences between the pre- and post-intervention fasting plasma glucose level of the cinnamon and placebo groups were significantly different. There was a significantly higher reduction in the cinnamon group (10·3%) than in the placebo group (3·4%). No significant intragroup or intergroup differences were observed regarding HbA1c, lipid profiles or differences between the pre- and postintervention levels of these variables. The decrease in plasma glucose correlated significantly with the baseline concentrations, indicating that subjects with a higher initial plasma glucose level may benefit more from cinnamon intake. No adverse effects were observed.”

Diabetes Support Supplements, a New Product from ProactiveLife Contains 2 grams of Omega 3 Fish Oil

Omega 3 May Reduce Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease According to Recent Studies

Diabetes Support contains 2 grams of pure Omega 3 fish oil which according to a recent study shows it may benefit people with Type 2 Diabetes.  Numerous studies in the past decade have shown clinical support for the use of omega 3 fatty acids supplements to assist in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

A study published in Nutrition and Metabolism is the first to show how omega 3 fatty acids play a role in metabolic processes with respects to blood sugar and fat processing; reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.  Professor Brier leads an international research team and indicates omega 3 fatty acids improve carbohydrate and fat metabolism.  A diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids helps to burn metabolic fuels (glucose and fat) better, and can regulate energy storage across different tissues.

“These findings are important because the ageing process is closely linked with a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome – a clustering of risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and obesity,” says Professor Breier, Chair of Human Nutrition at the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health at Albany.

Type 2 Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions with nearly 26 million confirmed diabetics and 79 million pre-diabetics in the Unites States.  Spending on diabetes will exceed $180 billion in 2012 according to US government statistics.

Diabetes Support Supplements a New Product from ProactiveLife Contains Chromium Which May Provide Benefit for People with Type 2 Diabetes

Chromium highlighted in two studies shows a reduction in A1C and Glucose Levels

Diabetes Support Supplements a new product from ProactiveLife contains chromium to help lower blood sugar levels.  It has been known for sometime approximately 90% of American diets are low in chromium.  Chromium is an essential mineral that plays a role in how insulin helps the body regulate blood sugar levels and is now found in Diabetes Support Supplements. Insulin is a hormone that your body uses to change sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life. There is evidence for those with diabetes taking a chromium supplement may help lower blood sugar levels.

People with diabetes either do not make enough insulin or cannot properly use the insulin that their bodies make. As a result, glucose or sugar builds up in the bloodstream.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study, people with type 2 diabetes who took chromium picolinate had better HbA1c values — used to measure long-term control of blood sugar levels — than those who took placebo. The group taking chromium also had better fasting blood glucose levels, a measure of short-term control of blood sugar levels.

Another double-blind, placebo-controlled study looked at a combination of chromium and biotin. Half the people in the study took chromium picolinate and biotin, and the other half took placebo. Those who took chromium and biotin had better fasting glucose levels as well as HbA1c values.”

Ultimately, we all want to appear prettier, sexier and more desirable but these should be the rewards of fitness not the goals. Understanding why we should stay fit will help to remind you of one simple fact…. ‘Health is your biggest wealth’,” by Michael Stirk expert trainer and former US Navy helicopter rescue swimmer.

“If you have type 2 diabetes, your doctor probably encouraged you to make some dietary changes to help get your blood sugar under control. If you understand that blood sugar control is needed to the prevent complications of diabetes, you have an important reason to continually remind you “why” you need to make this change. For any change to last, the reason has to be important to you.” by Gretchen Scalpi (registered dietitian,  certified diabetes educator, and certified Wellcoach®).
